Aboriginal Community Officer

Council’s Aboriginal Community Officer position is jointly funded by the Department of Community Services and Greater Taree City Council, to provide community information and education and to raise awareness of issues, services and activities. Council's Aboriginal Community Officer is responsible for:

Aboriginal Community Profile

  • Supervising Council's Aboriginal Youth Service - Woombarra Wunggan Youth Services.
  • Assisting with community organisation of NAIDOC events.
  • Facilitating the Koori Interagency.
  • Providing support to and resourcing Indigenous organisations.
  • Co-ordinating Council's Reconciliation morning tea.
  • Liaising, on behalf of Council, with various government and non government community based organisations in relation to Aboriginal affairs.

Manning Indigenous Community Awards

The Manning Indigenous Community Awards is an annual event which recognises the outstanding achievements of Aboriginal people of the Manning across a variety of fields such as employment, education, arts, sporting, volunteer and the non Indigenous contribution.

It is a night that engages the broader community through the leadership, education, recognition, reconciliation and strong community partnerships.

Woombarra Wunggan Youth Services

Woombarra Wunggan Youth Services is a NSW Community Services funded Aboriginal Adolescent Support Program. The program supports Aboriginal young people aged 12-18 years and provides a range of recreation, social and learning programs.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observation Committee. Originally known as NADOC (the I for Islander was added in 1989), the Committee was established in 1957.

The first Aborigines Day was celebrated on Sunday 28 January 1940. In 1955, Aborigines Day became a national event and was celebrated in July for the first time. 1975 was the first year the celebration took place over a year.

Gadhang (Kattang) Language

Muurrbay Aboriginal Language Corporation have a program to revitalise the Gadhang (Kattang) language.

In 2010 the Corporation published A grammar and dictionary of Gathang. The language of the Birrbay, Guringay and Warrimay
