“Celebrating Abilities” is an annual event for people of the Manning Valley with disabilities that has competitions in art, cooking and poetry, and finishes with a concert at Saxby’s Basketball Stadium. The concert is held on the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) with the goals of providing opportunities for people with disability to express themselves through fun and positive activities.
IDPwD is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being. “Celebrating Abilities” has taken on the objectives of IDPwD including the seeking to increase awareness of the benefits of the integration of people with disability in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. This event brings together all people those with and without disability, general public, community organisations, businesses, individuals and all levels of government. IDPwD unites people around the world in celebrating and acknowledging the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability and in the Manning Valley that is through “Celebrating Abilities” events.
This year the Celebrating Abilities Concert will be held on Tuesday 3 December 2013 at Saxbys Basketball Stadium at the end of Bligh Street in the Taree Recreation Centre and the stadium will be open from 10.00 am with the award presentations commencing at 10.30 am followed by the concert at 11.00 am.
The competitions of Art, Poetry and Cooking are being held again this year.
The Art and Poetry competitions’ entries will be on display at the Taree Show 12 and 13 October 2013 and of course, the concert (please note closing date).
