Volunteers

Greater Taree City Council is committed to supporting volunteerism as a way of engaging with and involving the community in delivering and providing services to support its core business.

Council benefits from the efforts of volunteers through the support they provide in the delivery of services to assist in its service delivery. Currently Council has over 350 volunteers working in a variety of fields such as parks and gardens, youth services, art galleries, libraries and the Manning Entertainment Centre, just to name a few.

Without the support of these dedicated individuals, Council’s ability to provide the current level of services would not be as extensive. The recent community engagement process identified a strong desire by the community to increase the level of volunteer support given to Council.

Council is committed to their volunteers by recognising and following the Standards for Volunteering as outlined by Volunteering Australia. These standards protect volunteers by ensuring that they work in a safe, healthy and supportive environment. Additional information on volunteering can also be found at the Centre of Volunteering NSW.

Council is currently in the process of developing a set of internal policies and procedures for the management of volunteers in line with the national standards to improve its support of volunteering.

Current volunteers with Council are being asked to support this process and an induction, education and awareness program is due to be rolled in the near future.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Volunteering can be a lot of fun and is a great way of meeting people and new friends. Many volunteers also benefit from learning new skills and getting work experience that can help secure paid work in the future.

Some volunteers get satisfaction from putting their existing experience or professional skills to good use by donating their talents to our cause. Whatever your motivation, you can be sure that your efforts will be making a real contribution to our work.

How much time do I have to give?

Our volunteers are free to choose their own level of commitment, provided they stay within the Volunteering Australia's policy of a maximum of 16 hours per week. Before undertaking any activity it's a volunteer's personal responsibility to find out the time and energy needed to carry out the job and make a commitment to effectively completing the task.

What training and support will I be given?

Where possible, we try to recruit volunteers with the relevant skills and experience to fit the role description. We provide induction and role-specific training for ongoing volunteers. All ongoing volunteers have access to our learning and development program and can discuss individual training and development needs with their Supervisor or the Volunteer Recruitment Officer.
