Council Roles & Responsibilities

Building Services

Council's Building Services is primarily responsible for ensuring that development within the Local Government Area complies with the Building Code of Australia and Council's plans and policies. In addition, this section is responsible for the implementation of Council's on-site sewage management program.

Community Wellbeing

The social health of the community is supported by providing services for young people, seniors and the Indigenous communities.

Council supports community wellbeing by providing parks and gardens, swimming pools and sports fields.

Council is responsible for the management and control of 17 cemeteries including the administration of interments, the taking of reservations, the keeping of registers, plans and other records and liaison with the public, undertakers and monumental masons

It also maintains and monitors environmental and food safety standards and manages the provision of waste and recycling services.

Cultural Services

Council provides library services to the community and promotes the arts through the Manning Regional Art Gallery and the Manning Entertainment Centre.

Development Services

Responsible for providing advice regarding the use and development of land. Assess and determine development proposals, monitor the development and use of land and facilitate minor rezonings for specific development proposals.
Prepares and implements Council's Development Control Plan

Economic Development

The Economic Development section aims to create an environment conducive to business development.

The aim is to assist the establishment of new businesses, the retention and expansion of existing businesses in an effort to grow local industries and create employment opportunities. This involves ensuring the availability of business infrastructure such as appropriately zoned employment land and related services such as transport.

It also aims to attract the necessary skills to the region to support local businesses and ensure that ongoing learning opportunities are available.

Environmental Health

The Environmental Health section are responsible for regulating, educating and responding to complaints about issues related to Public Health, Food Safety, Environmental Pollution and Animal Control.

Roads & Bridges

Council maintains a road and bridge network of almost 1700 km of roads and over 200 bridges. Major infrastructure projects include the replacement of the Marlee and Duffs Bridges.

Strategic Planning/Environmental Management

Council's strategic planning team manage natural enviroment issues, heritage issues , Section 94 developer contributions and land use planning.

Tourism

Council supports tourism through its Visitor Information Centre, located on Manning River Drive Taree.

This involves operation of the Centre to cater directly for visitors as well as co-ordinating marketing and promotional campaigns designed to attract new and returning visitors to the area.

This is done in partnership with local tourism-related businesses and the support of Tourism NSW.
