Council Supports National Recycling Week

Thursday 5th November 2009

‘Recycle right’ is the message for National Recycling Week being celebrated on 9th – 15 November 2009. Greater Taree City Council, in conjunction with Planet Ark, is encouraging residents, workplaces and schools to re-use or recycle useful items rather than discarding them to landfill. Re-using and recycling items is something we can all do to save water and energy, and reduce carbon emissions. Did you know that recycling one aluminium can will save enough energy to run a TV for three hours!

Greater Taree City Council will be getting the message across through a variety of initiatives. A display highlighting the importance of recycling and showcasing appropriate library resources will be held in Greater Taree City Library.

The Library will also have drop off bins for mobile phones, smoke alarms and old batteries. Most batteries, especially those found in toys, clocks, and audio-visual equipment are single use items. Australians use thousands of tones of batteries every year, most of which end up in landfill where toxic metals such as cadmium, mercury and lead can leak and contaminate soil and groundwater. It’s important that they do not end up in landfill. Dropping off batteries for recycling re-claims these metals and prevents harm to the environment.

Other items that can be dropped off at the Library are old light globes, including old incandescent globes and fluorescent tubes, but they must be in their cardboard boxes and the glass should not be broken.

The community is also being encouraged to take part in the “Friday File Fling” as part of National Recycling Week.

“Truckloads of high quality office paper is currently stored away in the filing cabinets of Australian workplaces never to be used again,” said Amanda Chapman, Council’s Waste Management Officer. “The Friday File Fling encourages workplaces to set-aside time on Friday 13 November, to de-clutter their filing cabinets and give unused paper another life, either by placing it in their recycling bin or reusing single-sided paper to make an office notepad.”

National Recycling Week is also giving Greater Taree residents the chance to win one of 20 Green Starter Packs containing a variety of sustainable solutions for the home. Simply test your recycling knowledge with the Recycle Right interactive quiz at Recycling Week at Planet Ark and be in the draw to win one of the Starter Packs.

National Recycling Week is kindly supported by Orange Power, ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’, Australia Post and The Aluminium Can Group.
