Greater Taree City Council was formed on 1 January 1981 from an amalgamation of the former Taree Municipal Council, Wingham Municipal Council and most of the former Manning Shire Council.
The Council area comprises approximately 3752 sq km and is located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. It is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean, in the north by the village of Johns River, in the south by the Wang Wauk River, with the western boundary just east of the village of Nowendoc.
The Council's Administrative Centre is located in the city of Taree.
