Judy Campbell's MOSAIC with Bandika Ngao
Wednesday, 21 October 2009
3:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Details: Sydney-based band MOSAIC are proud to announce their second Australian tour for 2009, led by Judy Campbell and featuring some of Australia's finest musicians. Once again Mosaic will be reunited with the dynamic Kenyan percussionist Bandika Ngao. Mosaic's music is a joyous, multicultural fusion of World Music and Contemporary Jazz. With influences ranging from African to Jewish, Brazilian and American music, they celebrate musical diversity through the lens of contemporary Australian jazz. A strong focus on vocal textures and an ongoing musical collaboration with Kenyan master percussionist Bandika Ngao bring added depth and diversity to this exciting group. Mosaic's line up includes piano, bass, drums, saxophone, two frontline vocalists plus additional backing vocals. Percussion has become a key part of the sound. Judy also adds the unique sound of an array mbira, based on the traditional African mbira. The new EP Waters of Kenya is the second CD collaboration with Kenyan percussionist Bandika Ngao and was inspired by the group's association with the Tweed Shire Council of NSW, whose Kenyan Mentoring Program operates in remote parts of Kenya to ensure clean water for local people. The CD is a collection of songs that relate in one way or another to the multi-faceted theme of water in Kenya. Music lovers in Taree have the chance to experience the rhythms of East Africa by participating in a 1 hour percussion workshop led by Bandika Ngao (Kenya). Beginners at 3.30pm ($12) and intermediate/advanced drummers at 4.45pm ($12). The evening will close with a special concert by the full band, including Bandika Ngao at 6pm. Tickets cost $15 (including a free glass of wine). Book now, places are limited.
