Gwen Ford art gallery exhibition

Tuesday 20 October 2009

Manning Regional Art Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of outstanding glass sculptures, quilts and art by one of the Manning Valley’s outstanding artists, Gwen Ford.

The exhibition, titled ‘Shiny Things’ will be officially opened by the Mayor of Greater Taree, Paul Hogan at the Manning Regional Art Gallery on Friday 23 October at 6.30pm.

Gwen has been working in her studio at Killabakh melting, moulding and polishing glass and quilting beautiful works in preparation for this exhibition over the past 12 months.

Manning Regional Art Gallery Director, Sue Mitchell said that many of the works are based on wonderful collections of interesting and beautiful things that Gwen has made over many years. “Three large display boxes are filled with hundreds of weird and wonderful things that Gwen has found in her shed - and what a shed it is.”

Gwen Ford moved to the Manning Valley about 24 years ago after completing a degree in visual arts, majoring in glass and graphic investigation at the Canberra School of Art. She has attended many master classes with glass artists from Germany, USA, Britain and Australia and continues to experiment with the medium. Gwen has had her work shown for over three decades in both group and solo exhibitions and is represented in private collections in Australia and Japan. Her mosaic work can be seen in the path at the Manning Regional Art Gallery, and her submission for a public sculptural wall piece in mosaic has been chosen for display by Greater Taree City Council.

As well as functional and sculptural glass pieces, Gwen also works in other mediums including architectural stained glass, drawing, pastel, watercolour and mosaic. Over the last few years she has been making individually designed patchwork quilts and wall hangings.

Gwen and her husband, Chris now live outside Wingham where they have a workshop. Since moving to the Taree area they have both been very active in the Visual Arts community.

Members of the public are invited to attend this exhibition with tickets on sale at the door ($8 for adults $5 for Friends of the Gallery).
