Aboriginal profile information

Wednesday 21 October 2009

Greater Taree City Council now has access to comprehensive demographic information on the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The information is a new addition to the Community Profile, is an online resource, which includes demographic information specific to the local government area using results from the 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 Census of Population and Housing.

The Community Profile is designed to inform community groups, business, investors, students and the general public. The Profile provides comprehensive percentage based information on ‘who we are’ including where we were born, our religious affiliations, the languages we speak, our household income, our qualifications and levels of education. The Profile provides information on ‘what we do’ including our occupations, industry types and employment status. It also provides information on ‘where we live’ including the makeup of our households, the kind of dwellings we occupy and the transport we use.

Greater Taree City Council’s Aboriginal Community Officer, Joeanne Tallentire said that the Community Profile has recently been updated and now provides a Profile specific to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. “This is an excellent resource for Council and the general community to have at their disposal as the information can be used to help better understand the community and make evidence based decisions in planning. It is also a tool that can be utilised to help the community advocate for and influence other levels of government as required.”

The Community Profile including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Profile can be accessed on the Council’s website at www.gtcc.nsw.gov.au. Users can access the Profile by going to Business Information/Community Demography/Community Profile/Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Alternatively, Library staff are available to assist users.
