Manning Regional Art Gallery has won the NSW ‘IMAGINE’ Award 2009 for Excellence in Museums and Galleries.
Gallery Director, Sue Mitchell was presented with the trophy at a gala awards night at the Australian National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour on Saturday 17 October. Sue represented the Gallery team, including the staff, Friends of the Gallery (FOGS) and Gallery volunteers at the event which was hosted by Peter Brenner of the ABC TV’s ‘Einstein Factor’.
The awards are run by Museums and Galleries NSW, Museums Australia and the Regional and Public Galleries of NSW. Nominations were received from 62 public museums and galleries around NSW and the ACT. Of the five categories only two went to Galleries -(Manning Regional Gallery and Lake Macquarie City Gallery.
Sue Mitchell said: ”The nomination for the Award was a welcome and well deserved honour for all the people involved in making the Gallery such a success. To actually win the Award is a great pat on the back for striving for excellence and putting in the energy needed to achieve it. Special thanks must go to the Friends of the Gallery and the volunteers for their innovative support and hard work.”
Sue said that the Gallery team has vigorously pursued its mission: “To provide a Centre of Excellence for the Visual Arts and a focus for Visual Arts activity in the Manning Valley and to foster the production, understanding and appreciation of the Arts in Greater Taree, attract visitors to the area and enhance the quality of life of its residents.”
The Award follows years of success in developing the Gallery and its programs for the community of this area. Presently, new Gallery extensions are underway which will complete the three stages undertaken in 1998 when the Gallery moved its operations from the old site in the Manning Entertainment Centre to Macquarie Street .
President of the Friends of the Gallery, Barry Schlenker and Sue Mitchell presented the trophy to the people of the Manning on Friday night, October 23 at the opening celebration of the Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize and Gwen Ford’s ‘Shiny Things’ exhibition.
